TRAPPED THE EP BY OLA BONNY TEEZY

The TRAPPED the EPproject was made during the worldwide spread of Covid19 and eventual lockdown. This period got me lost in deep thought as I pick my pen to write about societal ills like rape, suicide, depression, drug abuse etc. The intent of TRAPPED the EP is to create more awareness on the ills of the present-day--especially against women. Rape, Drugs, Abuse are some of these topics that we pretend don't exist but are at the core of the problems we have today. I want people to talk more about that and to share in my belief for a better future.

The TRAPPED the EP is made whole-fully with powerful stories laced beautifully across the common topic of interest. Have you listened to a song and got lost in the art? That is the experience this project offers at first listen. Every single song on the project perfectly compliment the previous one - making you feel the obvious urge to listen to end.

One thing you will enjoy from the TRAPPED the EP, is the rich lyrical content and poetic justification. Every song was obviously well planned and written down (with a clear message attached)

Below is the track-list. (All tracks are mixed and mastered by myself)

1.    Swerve (Prod. by Vin Ace)

2.    Suicide (Prod. by AndreOnBeat)

3.    Slam (Prod. by UnknownCookUp)

4.    Migo (Prod. by GMP)

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH APRIL MAEY

In recent times, the music industry has seen Nigerian women become bold with their spread choices of music into depth from Disc Jockeying, Playlisting and curations,Song writing and soulful Artistes pushing the culture to the next level. Belgium based Nigerian alternative artiste , April “Somi” Maey with masters in new media at the VUB in Brussels Belgium released her Debut EP “Ticket To Anywhere” with songs like Somebody,Starry nights etc while she continuously expressed her identity on each track. She has worked with notable Artistes like MI Abaga,YCee,Reinhard,Oxlade to mention a few. The project displays her musical prowess to flow between multiple genres considering her lack of experience in the industry.

Congratulations on your debut EP April, considering your skeletal discography and lack of experience in the industry, how were you able to make this happen?

Well, I just wanted to put together a project to test the market and see how people receive it. I was lucky enough to have a few people in the industry help me through it and give me some feedback, citymonstar, Boogey, slay Velli. They all really helped me find the sound I wanted and yeah, we made it happen.

You're a Nigerian based in Belgium tell us more about yourself?

I’m just a chill person, and I really like to go with the vibe. Nigeria has impacted me a lot and I like to show that and appreciate the culture. There isn’t a lot going on apart from music and school. I study a masters degree at VUB in Brussels and I’ll be done in 2021. Before then, I’ll just focus on putting out good music and developing as an artist and performer!

What made you pursue a career in music?

I’ve always loved music, it’s my biggest inspiration, I worked at chocolate city music and the love for music grew, so I decided to give it a shot!

What would you describe your sound as?

I just love vibes! I love lyrics and emotion and sometimes I just like to vibe on songs, so get ready for different versions of me and I’d say prepare to be surprised haha!

What was the creative Process of your EP “Ticket to anywhere”?

There were a lot of songs that didn’t make it on the project. I just wanted it to be relaxing and try to express different feelings through the music. Ticket to Anywhere was mostly about my transition from design to music, and merging different versions of myself.

You maintained the same low charming tempo which allows each track to perfectly fit into another, how's your growth been music Wise?

I’ve grown a lot in the past year, but I definitely want to express different feelings, not just the one chill vibe. And I’d like to experiment a lot, there’s still so much I haven’t tried and I’m excited to just dive into it

For you the EP “Ticket to anywhere” is a big story book, what inspired the project?

It was about merging the design/creative side of myself and the music side. Most times people want you to focus on one thing. But I’m not like that, I want to be as creative as possible and express myself in as many ways as possible. That’s what inspired the project, my willingness to create and try new things.

Talking about Collaborations, who would you love being in the studio with creating music?

Asa, Omah Lay, Burna Boy. And a lot more!

What's next for you April?

Right now I’m focusing on building myself as an artist and testing the market, seeing what works best and making good music.

Reinventing Yourself

The most constant thing in life is change and that occurs every time the clock ticks, yesterday is gone and today has come without taking permission from nature or earth ,same way change happens and we have to move with it or be left offside. Lets talk on something that has left a lot of youths stranded with thoughts and questions."Reinventing yourself!! What does it mean to reinvent yourself? How do I start? Why is it important and all those questions roaming through your minds.

CHANGE IS NOT SOMETHING YOU DO SOMEDAYS AND TAKE A BEAK FROM OTHER DAYS

To change the way that you behave or the things that you do so people think of you as a new bred/a different kind of person is reinventing yourself and the good thing about this is you can reinvent yourself anytime. you need to understand the laws of change and time to be able to help in becoming a new person but sometimes its always a hard nut to crack in knowing whether perseverance or reinvention is the right decision. it is always important to talk and ask questions on why we are doing what we do,you cant set your time on another mans clock or wangle into a craft you know nothing about just because your peers are flocking around it. If what you're doing is your dream and passion, then don't divert your attention. many will ask if its important to reinvent yourself, yes it is very important so you don't stay stagnant because you can lose everything you see today and how do you get it tomorrow?by sleeping on your bed?or drowning in your thoughts? No you have to pick yourself and recreate you into a new person. This has a lot to do with you as a human, the principal reason is to keep reinventing yourself to ensure that life doesn't become stagnant, things may not work out but if you keep looking at every blessed day with the same views you're bound to be crippled by negativity and bad energies surrounding your thoughts.

CHANGE IS A SHIFT IN LIFESTYLE

 STEPS TO THRIUMPHANTLY REINVENT YOURSELF

1] Do you really want to move on?
This should be the first question you sincerely ask yourself when you want to move on and if the answer is positive then you are good to go. I have seen that if you don't want to change ,you never will and from that point you are left stagnant on life.

2] Picture yourself outside yourself.
An artist stares at his art as he endlessly finds new ways to shape. That's how you need to see yourself as a work of art in progress,no need to get sad or step down on yourself when you see something you don't like instead like Nike, just do it.

3]Practice and push yourself everyday.
Reinventing requires daily dedication to the point where that new habits take the place of an old one and no longer requires conscious effort.

4]Surround yourself with the truth.
In the world today,a lot of yes men are scattered everywhere,if you're trying to be a new being stay far and stay close to those that fed you the bitter truth, you need people who are going to challenge and question you, you need people who wont be afraid to spill the bitter truth to your face.

5]Life is a risk so you must take it
You will never become the person you want to be by continuing to be the person you currently are."Comfort is the fall of kings",to unlock your new growth you must step out of your comfort zone until you are willing to take that risk, you will forever stay where you are.

Man Of The House

Small boy playing on the sounds of time,
Never expected the rain to shower on our dreams,
Watched the drama unfold like gifts from boxes,
A little boy saw his family get homeless,
I got lost when I was young then hunger gave me comfort.

I endured all the pains and shame from strangers,
Dad told us that some days will be rainy,
But this storm might blow us all away,
I saw love turn hate before the sun sets at dawn,
This life we live is strange but trust it to be sane.

Mom cried and said “son you have this family on your back”,
Then I knew the journey of greatness began from there,
They closed the casket on kanyin my heart broke into pieces,
I wrote this piece crying like it happened yesterday,
I went on my knees and asked God what's my purpose,
He replied with rainbows and the sun kept shining.

LOVE IS NOT FED UP

“Love doesn't make the world go round, Love is what makes the trip worth while”.

Love is composed of a single body inhabiting two different souls. Like the saying “It takes two to tango”, so not replying his/her texts or ghosting on your partner isn't the best way to grow love.
In our present day generation, many of us idealize love, we imagine a soft pleasurable feeling of emotions and care without actually doing the work. Some see it as as a lofty cure for all of life's problem. As we keep up with this,we underestimate the power of love and begin to swerve into lust and the end result is our relationships begins to suffer and pay the price of our negligence.
Believing we all need love is not enough to play the cards to win, we most likely forget the core values such as honesty, commitments, self care, trust towards the ones we genuinely love.

Someone once said;

“If love solves everything, then why bother with the other stuff?yes all the unnecessary things”.

We stay worried over alot we shouldn't bug about in our relationships due to alot of things eg, past occurrences, third parties, unwanted pressure, falling in love out of pity etc and it gradually takes our minds off the good things and we focus more on the end without beginning the trip.

Love is like alcohol, it intoxicates you at first on the sweet start and clears off when you wake in the morning.

BITTER SWEET TRUTHS ABOUT LOVE.
No matter how much we eat on our fantasies and idealize our love stories. There are some hard truths I'd be talking about today.

1) Healing Doesn't Mean Forgetting.
It's funny how couple's after a week of breakup come online to fight for peace and happiness or claim to heal and have forgotten about their pasts. That's a big lie and for you to heal, you've to admit pain and even after this phase, forgetting what hurt you might be difficult to brush under the rug.

2) Love Does Not Equal Compatibility.
Falling in love is one of the best feeling in the world but that doesn't mean whoever you're in love with must feel that same way towards you or be good to you over the long term. It's possible to fall in love with someone who doesn't treat us well and then we start thinking we are not enough for him/her. When I think about the sad relationship stories we see around today, I go asking questions and it's always rhetorical.

NB: When in search of your missing piece, you must use your mind and not your heart and if you end up with your heart, you might just have a bad time.

3) Closure isn't real.
You can mourn the loss of someone you lose. But you can never truly get over it because when you lose someone,a part of you is lost with them. Closure is a sad effort by you to regain that part of you that is lost. It can be hurtful, mean and regressive, your past will always be your past so move on and appreciate the past for whatever it taught you.

4) Don't ever beg for someone to love you.

5) Be careful who you give your heart to.

6) People will disappoint you again and again.

7) It is not uncruel to block your Ex.

8) There will be people in your life that you will never be able to forget or stop loving them.

9) Always know when to use the door.
