DJ Slim Jerry: the Ghanaian cultural bridge-builder steering Afrobeats into new waters with ‘Abonteen’

The veteran DJ has long been an architect of New York’s Afrobeats scene. This
summer, he’s raising the temperature with the sun-drenched vibes of ‘Abonteen,’ a track
that showcases his mastery of the genre and hints at its possible future.
With summer fast approaching, one track is racing to define it: the kinetic ‘Abonteen,’ a
song that distills the very essence of Afrobeats and ventures into new territory. For
culture loyalists, this comes as no surprise. DJ Slim Jerry has been instrumental in the
genre’s rise overseas. For over two decades, the man of the hour–born Jerry Adu–has
carried the sound of Accra into the heart of the Bronx, becoming the borough’s most
celebrated Ghanaian DJ. Now, with ‘Abonteen,’ he’s channeling that legacy into a bold
anthem that captures the thrill of being outside.

But don’t take our word for it. Slim Jerry’s portfolio speaks volumes about his influence.
The Bronx native has shared stages with some of Ghana’s most celebrated acts:
Grammy-nominated Stonebwoy, the “Dancehall King” Shatta Wale, Hip-Hop/Hiplife duo
R2Bees, Prince Bright of BukBak, Tinny, and Obrafour, alongside DJ Tunez (Wizkid’s
official DJ) and Kizz Daniel. Each collaboration highlights a simple truth: DJ Slim Jerry
commands respect among his peers as a cultural bridge linking Afrobeats’ epicenters to
New York’s music scene.

So where does ‘Abonteen’ fit in? Well, it’s more a statement than a nod to his legacy.
The track arrives at a time when the global appetite for Afrobeats is at its peak. Named
after the Akan word for “outside,” it captures the irresistible pull of the streets,
encapsulating the same energy that fuels Detty December. Beneath the song’s
infectious rhythms, however, lies Slim Jerry’s next frontier: Afro House. The DJ is
experimenting with ways to blur the line between West Africa’s nightlife scene and the
Bronx’s musical heritage, crafting a sonic landscape that mirrors Afrobeats’ evolution
beyond borders.

What’s next is anyone’s guess, but ‘Abonteen’ offers a glimpse of that future. No
wonder Slim Jerry calls his latest a “love letter to every soul who lives for the
moment.” With its sun-drenched melodies and instant Quotables, he couldn’t be more
right. The song sparks movement, the kind that can turn any open-air venue into a
bustling dancefloor. It’s clear ‘Abonteen’ was destined to own the season, and the
maestro reminds us why: “‘Abonteen’ is for anyone who knows what it feels like
when the warmth hits and it’s time to step outside for a ride,” he says. “That fizzy
energy is bottled up in this song.”

Azonto’s unfinished business: why it deserves a global reintroduction

There was a time when you couldn’t attend a party in Accra without hearing the first

few drums of Azonto and watching the entire room transform.

Azonto wasn’t just a genre. It was a movement.

Born from the streets and coastal communities of Ghana, Azonto blended rhythm,

humor, storytelling and dance into one unforgettable cultural export. It turned

everyday gestures into choreography. It made a local slang global and gave

Ghanaians a soundtrack that felt proudly ours, loud, confident, playful, and

unapologetic.

When songs like ‘U Go Kill Me’ by Sarkodie hit the airwaves, it didn’t just dominate

Ghana, it traveled. And when E.L fused rap, melody and dance rhythms into club-

ready records, Azonto evolved from a dance craze into a mainstream sonic force.

Producers built beats specifically for it, dancers created identities around it, the

diaspora amplified it. For a moment, Azonto was Ghana’s loudest cultural statement

to the world.

Honorable mentions to E.L – Obuu Mo and Kaalu, Guru – Lapaz Toyota, R2Bees –

Life (Walaahi), Stay Jay – Shashee Wowo, Keche – Aluguntugui, Gasmilla –

Telemo, Fuse ODG – Antenna, Edem – Over Again, Kwaw Kese – Let Me Do My

Thing.

Fuse ODG played a pivotal role in taking Azonto beyond Ghana’s borders. With his

breakout single ‘Antenna’, he introduced the Azonto sound and dance to the UK

mainstream and wider international audience. The record wasn’t just a hit, it became

a cultural export, placing Ghanaian rhythm on global charts and dance floors. At a

time when African music was still fighting for global space, Fuse ODG made Azonto

visible, commercial, and undeniable.

And then, it faded…

Not because it lacked power. Not because it lacked global appeal, but because

trends shifted. Afrobeats expanded, the industry chased new sound, and consumers

craved something different. Today, many describe Azonto as “abandoned.” The

drums that once shook events now feel nostalgic. Younger audiences may know the

moves, but not the origin. Yet the core ingredients that made Azonto explode still

exist: strong percussive Ghanaian rhythm, dance-driven identity, cultural storytelling

viral potential.

In fact, in today’s TikTok and short-form video era, Azonto might be more positioned

for global impact than ever before. It was built for virality before virality was even a

strategy.

The conversation now is revival and not repetition.

Reviving Azonto doesn’t mean recreating 2012. It means refining the sound,

modernizing the production, collaborating across borders, and positioning it

intentionally. It means: updated production quality, strategic international

collaborations, strong branding tied to Ghanaian identity, leveraging digital dance challenges, and

owning the narrative. Globally, audiences respond to authenticity.

Look at how Amapiano became a worldwide force and there’s dancehall cycling

back. Sounds rooted in culture travel when positioned with clarity and consistency.

The genre doesn’t need saving. It needs strategy.

Artists who once carried it and the new generation watching have an opportunity. A

refined Azonto 2.0 could merge with contemporary Afrobeats, drill, or even electronic

influences while maintaining its Ghanaian heartbeat. Artists like DopeNation

represent a newer generation that understands the pulse of Azonto but modernizes it

for today’s audience. Their sound blends classic Azonto drum patterns with

Afrobeats bounce, catchy hooks, and high-energy production. What makes them

stand out is their ability to create dance-driven records that feel both nostalgic and

current at the same time. In many ways, their style proves that Azonto doesn’t need

to be revived from scratch, it simply needs to be refreshed and strategically pushed

again.

Azonto was never just a dance. It was identity, confidence, and Ghanaian creativity

packaged in rhythm. It gave us global moments, viral choreography, and records that

still move crowds today. What changed wasn’t the quality, it was the positioning.

With the right production value, intentional branding, and strategic international

collaborations, Azonto can thrive again. The world is already dancing to African

rhythms; Ghana doesn’t need to reinvent itself; it needs to refine and reintroduce

what it already perfected. The revival of Azonto is not about going backward. It’s

about recognizing unfinished global business.

If positioned well, Azonto could move from nostalgia to renaissance. And when that

drum pattern drops again, not as a throwback, but as a reintroduction, the world will

remember.

Because Azonto was never just a trend. It was and still can be a statement!!!

Kay Kamz is carving her own lane with Afro-inspired sounds.

A new voice is steadily carving out space within the evolving Afro music landscape

and that voice belongs to Kay Kamz.

Born Kate Addai Mununkum in Amsterdam to Ghanaian parents, Kay Kamz

represents a generation of artists whose identities stretch across cultures. With one

foot rooted in Ghanaian heritage and the other shaped by European influences, her

music naturally reflects that duality, blending traditional inspiration with modern

global sounds.

As a singer and songwriter, Kay Kamz moves comfortably across genres. She

weaves together elements of Afrobeats, Highlife, Afropop and Afro-soul. The result is

a sound that feels rhythmic and vibrant while still carrying emotional weight. Her

music often leans into themes of love, personal reflection, and the complexities of

human connection which she delivers through expressive vocals and honest

storytelling.

Her journey as a recording artist took a defining step on April 8, 2022, when she

released her debut project, “The Love Partner” EP. The project served as an early

introduction to her artistic direction, presenting songs that explored relationships,

vulnerability and emotional growth. With its melodic depth and relatable narratives,

the EP quietly positioned her as an emerging voice worth paying attention to within

the Afro music space.

She continued building on that momentum with the release of ‘The Way You Love

Me’ in July 2025: a record that reflects both confidence and artistic maturity. The

single highlights her evolving songwriting ability while reinforcing her signature

approach: emotionally driven music layered over contemporary Afro-inspired

production.

With each release, Kay Kamz is steadily shaping her identity as an artist who values

sincerity just as much as sound. Her music carries the warmth of Ghanaian musical

traditions while embracing the modern energy of today’s Afro-fusion movement. As a

new wave of Ghanaian artists continues to expand the reach of Afro music around

the world, Kay Kamz is carving her own lane, guided by authenticity, emotional

honesty and a clear creative vision.

With her sound continuing to evolve and her creative direction becoming clearer with

each release, Kay Kamz is entering an exciting new chapter. As she prepares to

unveil more music in the near future, listeners can expect deeper storytelling, richer

melodies and the same emotional honesty that has begun to define her artistry. If her

journey so far is anything to go by, the next wave of music from Kay Kamz promises

to further reveal the depth of her craft, and solidify her place among the emerging

voices shaping the future of Afro music.

annual celebrations. This year, however, the two have chosen a humbler path–a striking
departure from the spectacles of years gone by. Rather than flashy private parties or
quirky photoshoots, the brothers turned instead to philanthropy and community impact.
The duo amplified their charitable initiative, Smile4mation, dedicating MB28 to uplifting
Grace, a mother of four whose heart-wrenching story went viral.

According to the brothers, what everyone saw was only the beginning. “MB28 is all
about Smile4mation,” the brothers declared. They partnered with Electroland Ghana
Limited and Homeland to help restore hope to Grace, covering everything from a
complete home renovation to furnishings and seed capital for business opportunities.
The scale led many to describe the effort as Smile4mation’s most ambitious yet, a shot
in the arm for the impact MB28 seeks to establish.

With tens of thousands of Ghanaians rallying behind the movement, Smile4mation has
become a massive success, drawing widespread attention online. It is swiftly
conquering the internet with love, bringing communities together under the banner of
kindness and restoring the dignity of the forgotten, one video at a time.

As the Mitch Brothers redefine their annual celebration and spin it into a legacy of
compassion, their actions highlight a newfound responsibility to transform lives and
uplift others. Reflecting on the shift, they explained: “Birthdays have always been
personal for us, but Smile4mation changed that. We wanted to reiterate that
kindness is the most powerful gift of all. Grace’s story reminded us to keep
spreading positivity wherever we go: a message we feel is in line with our theme
for MB28.”

Dai Verse is a Nigerian singer-songwriter known for introspective lyricism, mid-tempo melodies, and honest storytelling. Blending influences from Afrobeats, Afro-Pop, and R&B, he creates music rooted deeply in personal experience and emotional authenticity.

Described by music critics as “one to watch,” his tracks vividly explore youth, vulnerability, resilience, and self-discovery, earning him recognition as a distinct voice in contemporary Nigerian music.

Born Akandu Ifeanyichukwu Chineme on 23 May 2000, in Nwagene LGA, Imo State, Dai Verse was raised in a family that deeply valued community and creativity. Growing up, he was influenced by traditional Nigerian sounds, church music, and the soulful melodies his parents played at home. Although initially private about his identity—often concealing his face during early performances—Dai Verse eventually stepped confidently into the spotlight to openly share his stories. He attended the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), graduating with honors . Dai Verse balanced his education with music, first experimenting with songwriting and recording during university. His stage name, Dai Verse, emerged from his reputation as a versatile talent— "jack of all trades" —excelling not only in
music but also across sports like football, basketball, volleyball, and table tennis.

His breakout moment came in 2020 with his debut single 'Cocaine' , an infectious hit praised for its melodic blend and lyrical depth. Following this success, Dai Verse released popular tracks including 'Colorado' featuring Zugo, and 'Sweet Daddy' featuring BNXN. Collaborations with notable Nigerian artists such as Iyanya, Runda, DJ Voyst, and Zugo further elevated his standing. To date, he has amassed over 70 million streams across all digital streaming platforms, consistently growing his loyal audience and community of over 190,000+ followers across social media channels.

Currently signed with Empire, Dai Verse continues to expand his musical reach, performing at key industry events including notable sets at Lagos' Mainland Block Party, his headline show in November 2024 and multiple appearances on Nigerian music TV shows. He has received significant co-signs from major platforms, including TurnTable Charts and Pulse Nigeria, further validating his rising star status. Now based in Lagos, Dai Verse remains committed to sharing narratives that resonate deeply with listeners, pushing the boundaries of his artistry through personal and relatable music.

Dai Verse launches his debut EP, 'Warrior’s Child' , a compelling seven-track journey. This EP takes its listeners through the complexities of coming-of-age and living up to
the legacies left behind by the ones who came before. The project, anchored in mid-tempo rhythms and vivid storytelling, explores the dualities of youth, capturing its blessings, struggles, and profound moments of self-discovery.

Opening with the title track,

- 'Warrior’s Child' sets the tone, immersing listeners
in vivid African war drums, symbolizing preparation and resilience.

- ’Social Misconduct’ addresses themes of betrayal and redemption, delivering a nuanced narrative of personal growth.

- In contrast, the lead single 'Save Me' delves into feelings of isolation, heartbreak, and the stark realization that help might never arrive.

- “What If' acknowledges loyalty and celebrates those who remain steadfast during difficult times.

- “DND' pays tribute to parental sacrifice, encapsulating a powerful message of community and giving back.

- “Demons' candidly portrays internal battles and the vulnerability in yielding to temptation.

- Finally, 'LLF' resonates as a hopeful anthem, urging listeners to "Live, Love, and Fight" amidst life's uncertainties.
